Career Summary- Video Game Designer by Angela Abraham, Talani Baker, and Logan WestmorlandÂ9/30/2015 When most people think about video games, they think of the games they have on their PlayStations or Xboxes at home, with video game designers being the people who simply draw and program the characters and images to move around. However, this is not entirely true, since there is much more to designing games. For starters, video games are not only played on systems at home, they can also be the games you download onto your phone, or even games you play online on your computer. Video game designing is a career in which teams of game designers work to create these video games for public entertainment. Designers must use parts of physics, technology, and math to create the games. They use Newton’s laws of motion and other laws of physics to make sure three-dimensional worlds have realistic motion, sound, and lighting. They have to use the physics to make sure a ball bounces as it should, a building explodes convincingly, and flowing water looks like it does in real life. Designers also use calculus, trigonometry, geometry and algebra to create proportionate graphical images, and have to calculate speed, velocity, acceleration, or angle in the movement of the characters. Video game designers constantly work with different types of technology, including PCs, laptops, and many types of computer software. The best part is that designers get to play their own video games to test them, or even play other video games for inspiration all day. This career largely contributes to society by providing entertainment - video games are a huge part of society, since almost 70% of Americans play them on their phones, computers, or any type of gaming system. |
